Biography

Doncaster’s Dominic Harrison (Yungblud) has declared himself as a socially-conscious artist unafraid of creating songs of protest. His music largely falls in the genre of alternative rock, but NME describes his work as extremely versatile and ‘utterly thrilling’. Some of his most popular tracks to date include ‘I Love You, Will You Marry Me’, ‘King Charles’ and ‘Loner’.

Yungblud began his musical journey from a young age. He left school at age 16 and started working on his sound, gaining popularity in 2017. His first album ‘21st Century Liability’ was released in July 2018, and shows off his ska-meets-hip-hop-meets-arctic-monkeys-meets-Jamie-T ability to produce something unique and fresh. He describes his biggest influences as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Arctic Monkeys, Green Day and T-Rex, the latter of which his grandfather performed with in the 1970’s.

While Harrison describes lead singer of Arctic Monkeys, Alex Turner, as a largely influential due to his relatability when growing up, he also draws on his passion to use music to comment on culture, signalling to the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Eminem, and other hip-hop artists. He uses his own experiences to inspire his songs, where ‘I Love You, Will You Marry Me’, was inspired by his friend who proposed to a girl by writing the line in graffiti. The graffiti then became a commercialised artwork yet his friend was left homeless and the girl died, leaving Harrison feel discontentment towards the situation. He further describes the world to be a ‘confusing world to live in’ with so much going on politically, which he thus intends to address in his own music.
