Minaj was born Onika Tanya Maraj in the Trinidadian capital of Port Spain in 1982 before her family moved to Queens, New York when she was five. She initially trained to become an actress before entering music, releasing her first mixtape Playtime Is Over in 2007. Minaj was eventually discovered by rapper Lil Wayne and signed to his label Young Money Entertainment, releasing her debut album Pink Friday in 2010. The album quickly went multi-platinum thanks in no small part to ‘Super Bass’, which proved to be a huge sleeper hit.
