Perhaps the most talented female rapper in the music business today, Nicki Minaj’s influence is only growing stronger. The Trinidadian-born New York native rose to fame in 2010 with the single ‘Super Bass’ and has become renowned for raunchy songs such as ‘Anaconda’ which are as colourful as her ever-shifting appearance. Minaj was born Onika Tanya Maraj in the Trinidadian capital of Port Spain in 1982 before her family moved to Queens, New York when she was five. She initially trained to become an actress before entering music, releasing her first mixtape Playtime Is Over in 2007. Minaj was eventually discovered by rapper Lil Wayne and signed to his label Young Money Entertainment, releasing her debut album Pink Friday in 2010. The album quickly went multi-platinum thanks in no small part to ‘Super Bass’, which proved to be a huge sleeper hit. Since then Minaj has evolved into a mega-pop performer with her blend of dance-pop and hip-hop, stunning the world with songs like ‘Anaconda’ whose video captured the public imagination. With her fourth album Queen out in August 2018, which she teased with the forceful song ‘Chun-Li’, Minaj doesn’t look like relinquishing her grip on the music world any time soon.
