The American rock group emerged in early 70’s with their self-titled album ‘Eagles’ in 1972. Throughout the decade, they continued to spin out iconic tracks that remain popular to this day, including ‘Heartache Tonight’, ‘Take It Easy’, ‘New Kid in Town’ and ‘Hotel California’. In 2006, ‘Their Greatest Hits’ (1971-1975) became the number one best-selling album of all time in the US, surpassing Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’.
The Eagles original lineup consisted of Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. Shortly after their fourth album Leadon left the band and was replaced by Joe Walsh, and similarly after their fifth and most iconic album ‘Hotel California’, also featured in the top three US best-selling albums of all time, Meisner left the band and was replaced by Timothy B Schmit. The new foursome released another studio album ‘The Long Run’, before breaking for years and concentrating on personal projects.
In the mid 90’s, the Eagles reunited and released more material. They found their way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, and embarked on more tours to celebrate their latest album. Sadly, founding member Glenn Fray passed away in 2016, and despite beliefs they would not play again, the band reformed with Fray’s son, Deacon, and country star Vince Gill.
Over the years, the Eagles have continued to justify their status as one of the best selling-artists to have spun out of the US. They are six-time Grammy Award-winners and have made it onto several ‘top artists’ or ‘best-selling group’ lists. They continue to please fans with more tours and have recently created their Legacy box set; a celebration of their career to date.
