Crystal Palace F.C.

Biography

Crystal Palace F.C. promises football with atmosphere as stunning as its name. A club renowned for its vociferous support, the London club’s current stay in the Premier League has lasted since the 2013-14 season. Nicknamed the Eagles, the club plays at Selhurst Park in south-east London. Crystal Palace was founded in 1905 at the Crystal Palace exhibition building in Hyde Park, London, giving the club its evocative name. The club joined the Football League in 1920 and moved to its current home of Selhurst Park in 1924 before spending much of its early history bouncing between English football’s lower divisions. Palace enjoyed its first spell in the top flight in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Since 1977 the Eagles have remained one of English football’s most famous ‘yo-yo’ clubs, competing exclusively in the country’s two divisions. The club was promoted to and immediately relegated from the Premier League four times in the league’s first 13 seasons, and competed in the 1990 and 2016 FA Cup Finals, losing both times to Manchester United. Famously associated with players such as Ian Wright, Gareth Southgate and, more recently, Wilfried Zaha, Palace has established itself as a Premier League mainstay in recent years, taking part in the league every season since 2013-14. The club also enjoys a fierce rivalry with Brighton and Hove Albion. If London’s glamour clubs don’t appeal to you, watching Crystal Palace play at Selhurst Park is well worth considering.
