CAROLINE, OR CHANGE

Biography

An Olivier award-winning musical with a hugely original, highly eclectic and uniquely American score, Caroline, or Change creates an uplifting and profound portrait of America at a time of momentous social upheaval. The story is set in Louisiana, 1963, during the revolution. Caroline is a maid at the time, looking after 8-year-old son Noah Gellman. He quickly develops an affinity towards her and soon begins leaving change for Caroline in his laundry, which sets in motion the troubles to follow. Caroline is exquisitely portrayed with a stunning performance by Sharon D. Clarke, famed for winning awards in her previous stage work. Tony award-winning Jeanine Tesori is behind the music, while the book and lyrics are provided by Tony Kushner, author of the acclaimed ‘Angels in America’. The production won the title of ‘Best New Musical’ when it premiered in London at the National Theatre in 2006, thanks to the rich array of emotions it evokes. It previously sold out at Chichester Festival and the Hampstead Theatre, but now returns with new shows at the Playhouse. The role of Caroline will be played by Naana Agyei-Ampadu on the following dates – 7 January, 14 January, 21 January, 28 January and Monday 4 February
